Mary Peterson Vargas grew up at beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia where she passed the time exploring God’s creation in the countryside and woods around her home. During her formative years, she pursued drawing as a passionate hobbyist, but unfortunately did not take art seriously as she entered her college and early married years.
After the birth of their first daughter, she grew interested in oils when her father took a painting class and helped her lay the basics. Mary studies the works of her favorite contemporary painters including Donald Jurney of Massachusetts and Marc Dalessio, (an American living abroad) and past masters such as Childe Hassam and Aldro T. Hibbard to refine her style. She has had the privilege of joining accomplished plein air artists in New England where the homeschooling family of five vacations annually. She has taught adults and children the basics of art and oil painting.
While she enjoys painting a variety of subjects, her greatest enjoyment comes from abridging the countryside, both Virginia and New England, onto the flat surface of a canvas. She seeks to capture the beauty of light and color. She loves displaying colors both in their more saturated brilliance and in lovely grays.
Family roots add significance to her painting; she is enjoying an art at which her late grandmother, Myrna Peterson, excelled and she enjoys painting with her father, Dave Peterson, by her side. She is a member of the League of Roanoke Artists and participates in plein air events around the area. Her work is displayed around Western Virginia at Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke, The Little Gallery at Smith Mountain Lake, The Artisan’s Loft in Staunton, and Southern Provisions in Lynchburg. She was thrilled to have a painting accepted for an event at Addison Art Gallery in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
